A short way from Taormina, the medieval village of Castelmola is considered one of the most beautiful and characteristic in Sicily. Perched more than 500 metres above sea level, it offers a spectacular view of Etna and the Ionian Sea. But it is not only the view that makes it famous: this is home to one of the most unusual bars on the island, Bar Turrisi.

Bar Turrisi and its phallic symbols

Founded in the 1940s, Bar Turrisi is now an icon of the village. What makes it unique in the world is its decor, entirely inspired by the phallic symbol: furniture, glasses, sculptures and even the door handles take this shape.

It is not a modern provocation but a nod to very ancient fertility cults, already present in Greek and Roman culture. In Castelmola the phallic symbol has become part of the bar’s identity, so much so that it has turned it into a real tourist attraction.

Almond wine and tradition

Besides its unusual atmosphere, Bar Turrisi is also the perfect place to taste the famous Castelmola almond wine, made with red wine, sweet almonds and natural flavourings. A drink that symbolises hospitality and tells the story and the flavours of the village.

An experience to enjoy

Visiting Castelmola means strolling through medieval lanes, admiring breathtaking views and stopping at Bar Turrisi, where tradition and curiosity come together in an experience that stays in the memory of everyone who tries it.
