In the heart of the Mediterranean, Sicily not only fascinates with its historic and cultural beauty but is also showing an extraordinary commitment to sustainable tourism and accessibility for all. Over the last year many Sicilian coastal towns have received prestigious awards such as the “Blue Flag”, the “Green Flag” and the “Lilac Flag”, highlighting their dedication to the environment, to families and to people with disabilities.
The “Blue Flag”, awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), stands for crystal-clear water and high-quality services. The coastal towns that receive it show a constant commitment to protecting the marine and coastal environment. But Sicily goes further: the award-winning towns did not stop there. The “Green Flag”, awarded by Italian paediatricians, recognises the attention paid to the needs of families on holiday, ensuring not only safe places for children but also services and activities designed to entertain them in an educational way.
Just as deserving is the “Lilac Flag”, awarded by the cooperative of the same name to towns that stand out for offering an inclusive and accessible welcome to people with disabilities. This underlines the importance of making tourist destinations accessible to everyone, helping to create a fairer and more respectful travel environment.
In a gesture that further strengthens these efforts, the Sicilian Region has given cash prizes to the award-winning coastal towns. In total 350,000 euros were allocated, shared among the towns according to the number of awards received and their population density. This financial incentive not only recognises the work done by local communities but also encourages their continued commitment to sustainable tourism and quality hospitality.
And that is not all: support for sustainability is not limited to the sea. A further 63,000 euros went to three towns that earned the title of “Plastic Free Towns” from a national non-profit organisation of the same name. This prize reflects their commitment to reducing single-use plastic and promoting eco-friendly practices, helping to preserve the natural beauty of the island.
In short, Sicily is showing a praiseworthy commitment to responsible, sustainable tourism that is accessible to all. The Blue, Green and Lilac Flags not only highlight the excellence of the coastal towns but also mark a step towards a more inclusive future that respects the environment. With the financial support of the Region and the enthusiasm of local communities, Sicily continues to shine as an example of how tourism can become a positive force for the planet and for people.
