In the heart of the Belice Valley, in western Sicily, lies one of the most striking and haunting places on the island: Poggioreale Vecchia, a ghost village frozen in time. Abandoned after the devastating Belice earthquake of 1968, this ruined town is now a fascinating destination for curious travellers, history lovers and anyone who enjoys the lesser-known villages of Sicily.

Visiting Poggioreale Vecchia means stepping into a silent Sicily, made of ruins, memory and deeply moving landscapes.

Where Poggioreale Vecchia is

Poggioreale Vecchia is in the province of Trapani, a few kilometres from today’s town of Poggioreale Nuova, rebuilt after the earthquake. The old village stands on a panoramic hilltop, surrounded by the hills and farmland typical of the Belice landscape.

Poggioreale before the earthquake

Founded in 1642, Poggioreale was a small but lively farming town. It grew around the Mother Church, with orderly streets, elegant palaces and a community deeply tied to the land and to Sicilian traditions.

For more than three centuries Poggioreale was one of the many rural villages of inland Sicily, until history changed everything.

The Belice earthquake of 1968

On the night between 14 and 15 January 1968, a series of violent tremors struck the Belice Valley. Poggioreale Vecchia was almost completely destroyed. Houses collapsed, streets split open, public buildings became unusable.

After the earthquake it was decided to abandon the original village and build a new town in a safer area: this is how Poggioreale Nuova was born. The old centre was never rebuilt.

Poggioreale Vecchia today: an open-air ghost village

Today Poggioreale Vecchia is an abandoned town, yet its layout can still be read with remarkable clarity. Walking among the ruins you can see:

The remains of the Mother Church

Old houses with their doors and windows wide open

Paved streets overrun by vegetation

Noble palaces reduced to stone skeletons

The silence is complete, broken only by the wind. It is one of the most impressive ghost villages in Sicily.
